About this vaccine

The Yellow Fever vaccine helps protect against yellow fever, a potentially severe illness spread by infected mosquitoes. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent this disease, especially for people living in or traveling to areas where yellow fever is common.

Why this test
  • The Yellow Fever vaccine protects against infection by the yellow fever virus, a serious and sometimes fatal disease transmitted by infected Aedes and Haemagogus mosquitoes. The infection can cause fever, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), bleeding, and organ failure.
  • Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent yellow fever, especially for people who live in or travel to areas where the virus is present, such as tropical regions of Africa and parts of South America, including northern and central Brazil (Amazon, Cerrado, Minas Gerais, Goiás, and Bahia) and northern Argentina (Misiones, parts of Corrientes and Formosa).
Age group
  • Recommended for individuals aged 9 months to 60 years.
Dosage Schedule
  • For most immunocompetent individuals, a single dose provides long-lasting, possibly lifelong protection.
  • Booster doses are not required for most travellers.
  • The vaccine should be given at least 10 days before travel to a risk area so that immunity can develop.
Medical Prescription
  • A doctor's prescription is needed to receive this vaccination.
  • Our medical team will contact you to review your health history and, if appropriate, provide a medical order for your vaccination.
  • For travel, most countries require an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP / “yellow card” ) showing the date of vaccination.

Precautions

Precautions
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women: the vaccine is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding, except when the risk of exposure is high and the benefits outweigh the potential risks. In such cases, the decision should be made together with a physician.
  • Adults over 60 years: The risk of serious vaccine-associated adverse events is higher; vaccination should follow risk–benefit discussion with a physician.
  • People with ongoing immune system conditions should be evaluated carefully.
  • Always consult your healthcare provider if you are not sure about your suitability for vaccination.
Contraindications
  • Children younger than 6 months.
  • People with severe allergies to eggs or any vaccine component (including neomycin and kanamycin).
  • Individuals with weakened immune systems (for example, due to HIV with low CD4, or immunosuppressive therapy) or with thymus disorders.
Side Effects
  • Most people experience no or only mild side effects, such as headache, muscle pain. These usually occur within the first week after vaccination and resolve on their own.
  • If you develop fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, or diarrhea after your shot, get in touch with your doctor.
How to Prepare
  • The vaccine is given by injection just under the skin in the upper arm.
